But last month the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones slid out the caveat that it would not be introduced until 'towards the end of the next Parliament' for fear it may damage the economy.
He stepped down on January 9 and will now work as special adviser to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, a position held by Salisbury MP John Glen.
Jones has become the party’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, a role that used to be held by Pat McFadden.
